Controlling what is important mean having an active role in investing. 401k's are great, you don't pay taxes, it gets matched up to a certain percentage then voila, someone else take it and makes it worth more. Get an IRA, pay your taxes upfront, take an active investing role, do research, pay attention to valuation, P&E, balance sheets, you don't need to be a genius, just don't listen to "experts." It's basics, your high's will not be as high and your lows sure as hell won't be as low. But your gains will be well in excess of any fund or government backed security. You won't have a million, but if you have 600,000 and your making 6% and you paid into social security AND you were smart and have an additonal portfolio and you don't invest in companies that blow through money without regard to investors you will come out well ahead of any of the people on either side of the "argument" I would definitely choose real estate, especially in developing areas of the Southeast, that's a safer bet than wallstreet anyday.GAThttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00554579926294617076noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2992740250270600844.post-35581089733322446952020-03-21T09:41:34.905-07:002020-03-21T09:41:34.905-07:00Dave 2020, You may not be aware of the fact most o...Dave 2020, You may not be aware of the fact most of my money is in real estate that I own. I see the value of these holdings may take a hit short-term but expect they will be more resilient than stocks. <br />The value of my real estate is far easier to defend than current stock prices. Best of luck and thanks for the comment.Bruce Wildshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10181323607060607040noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2992740250270600844.post-15501305953230027882020-03-20T15:35:50.792-07:002020-03-20T15:35:50.792-07:00No, trillions of dollars have not vanished. Folks ...No, trillions of dollars have not vanished. Folks like myself who have not engaged in panic selling still own the shares of actual tangible assets in the form of real estate, companies that make things and provide services, commodities, etc., the value of which will indeed recover once this hysteria has passed. I know this because, well, there is nowhere else to invest if one wants to make any money as govt. bonds, high grade corporate bonds, CDs, etc. no longer pay squat due to absurdly low interest rates. Yes, govts. have gotten themselves, and by association we the citizens, into a real mess because of their foolishness in incurring huge debts and forcing interest rates artificially low so they don't have an unmanageable interest charge - this will all eventually backfire and the chickens will come home to roost. This does not, however, bode ill for the stock market. You are constantly posting articles forecasting gloom and doom just like many did during the financial crisis of 2008-2009, and like them you are wrong. This will pass, and the markets will skyrocket once it does.Dave2020https://www.blogger.com/profile/15839510248960245602noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2992740250270600844.post-29596281166822077352020-03-20T12:55:42.468-07:002020-03-20T12:55:42.468-07:00You can't count your chickens if you don't...You can't count your chickens if you don't know where your coop is.Gordian knothttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02644358614023504915noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2992740250270600844.post-46396202387067099532020-03-19T12:43:57.790-07:002020-03-19T12:43:57.790-07:00All forms of IOU wealth are transactions half made...All forms of IOU wealth are transactions half made until its converted into tangible unambiguously held wealth. The serious disconnect between the claims on real wealth will be resolved via inflation, as the world attempts stave off debt default by progressively creating more currency to purchase debt and stocks. The end result will be full near complete nationalization of most companies and currency that has little purchasing power relative to right now.
