The worst punishments were for the political prisoners, who were also victims of criminals and the government inside the prison camps. Finally, as you note, even once released and supposedly having finished their sentence, this was far from true. The Soviets had a formal system of passports and blacklists, prohibiting the released from good jobs, sometimes ANY job, as well as food and housing. Compound this by the rational fears of the free citizens, and the released suffered even worse discrimination. Wonder if it'll get that bad here?
